Albemarle + Arid Bilge Systems: Interview with Keith Privott of Albemarle Boats

Alfred Baurley of Arid Bilge Systems interviewed Albemarle Boats‘ Keith Privott at the 2024 Miami Boat Show to talk about the Arid Bilge System and his line of boats.

Alfred: Albemarle has been around for many years, and they produce the highest possible quality of boats, highest possible quality finish, and they want to see their boats last. That’s where the Arid Bilge System delivers that clean, dry, fresh boating experience. Keith, you mind telling us a little about that?

Keith: Yeah, like you said, it’s from the maintenance standpoint, for the longevity of the boat, we try to use the top quality materials in the boat. Everything from even hardware: instead of using a typical 316 stainless, we’ll use chrome-plated stainless where possible. So, you’re always trying to upgrade materials and use the best quality, and part of that is to keep that boat looking as good and functioning as well.

Alfred: Albemarle has been around for how long now?

Keith: Forty-five years.

Alfred: All right. Tell me a little bit about your boats.

Keith: So, we are primarily offshore fishing boats. We do build some smaller dual consoles, but our customer focus tends to be more on the hardcore fishing guys. We have typically a little bit heavier construction. We like to think we pay a lot more attention to detail and just a little bit more refined boat.

And that’s how your system comes into play as far as what we offer. We have customers that really pride themselves on maintaining boats, and a lot of those customers do the maintenance themselves. It’s just a labor of love for them to tinker around on a boat and keep it clean and upgrade everything they can.

Alfred: You would say that the Arid Bilge System really helped improve your line of boats?

Keith: I’d say so. I mean, it’s one of those systems that you don’t have to think about it. As a builder, you like systems that you can put in, and if you don’t hear back from them, that means it’s functioning correctly, and it’s not an issue. We use so many components on the boat. We deal with thousands of vendors and at the same time, we try to get the best quality you can get. The idea is to offer an experience where they don’t have to worry about replacing components or fixing. They can enjoy the boat instead of working on the boat. But also just the appearance and the odor, I mean, it just plays into everything we’re trying to do and offer better boating experience–less hassle, and more enjoyment out of the boat that they’re paying us to build.

Alfred: So one of the point with the Arid Bilge System is, we go in and make everything completely bone dry, and when it’s a dry and clean environment, it’s a happy environment in your boat. So you would say that it coexists very well in that sort of fashion for you?

Keith: Absolutely. We do finished bilges, obviously. It’s almost like it’s going to a next level over the last 20 years in particular, where it’s not the utilitarian, “let’s go out there and just fish and hammer the fish every day and come back and wash the boat down.” It’s like everything’s become more refined, and the expectations now are that you open an engine room and you’re almost dazzled by how everything is just so clean and white and well appointed. So we’ve really gone down that route, particularly in the last ten years, to pay more attention to the level of fit and finish, even down in the bilges. So when you open an engine room, everything’s nice and clean and bright, and you look down, and you don’t see puddles of water in the bilge, you don’t have any stain. We finish the bilges. A finished gel-coated bilge, if you let water sit there for weeks at a time, you start to see a little staining here and there.

Overall, it just keeps the appearance of the boat up. It keeps the maintenance at a minimum. It’s kind of a no-brainer for us to put the system on the boat. Like I said, the boats are becoming more and more refined. The systems are becoming more complicated. Everything’s becoming integrated now, so we have to grow with the business and with the technology. But at the same time, the core principles are still there of “build it stronger than it needs to be, build it for the worst-case scenario, and hope for the best.” And at the end of the day, regardless of what kind of conditions you get caught in, you’re going to come home with the same boat structurally and aesthetically. It’s going to hold up over time. And we do that by the techniques we use, building more glass than we should. Our boats are typically heavier than most, and that’s because of the materials we use. We’ve learned the construction techniques over the years, glassing everything back together and creating almost like a unibody construction where nothing moves unless everything moves. Through experience, we’ve figured out what holds up on a terrible day offshore, and we build them for that scenario.

Fast forward to today, and our largest boat is 53′  while our smallest is 25′. We have a pretty broad range of product, but it’s all dedicated to being offshore-capable, holding up over time, and being the same boat even in 20 years that it was the day it was built as long as it’s maintained and taken care of.

Bilge Paint and Standing Water: Interview with J.P. Ferris of Axalta Coating Systems

J.P. Ferris has been painting boats and mega yachts throughout his 35-year career. He’s also painted aircraft, amusement park set designs, and vehicles in a factory setting. As a national brand manager with Axalta Coating Systems, he covers the Marine, Aviation, Fleet and Industrial segments, and he can often be found providing in-person consultation services to major boat builders all over the country.

I got the chance to sit down with J.P. at a recent boat show, where he was manning a table covered in colorful paint swatches. I asked him some questions about the paint and gelcoat in the bilge of a boat, and learned the following:

 

There are multiple types of finishes available on the market, but most fiberglass boats either have a gel coat or a Urethane coating. These coatings each have different pros and cons, but both require basic routine maintenance to stand the test of time. Maintenance is usually fairly simple if you keep in mind that marine coatings have one main enemy: standing water.

Urethane coatings are often used in bilges because it looks nice and is easy to clean, but they can react very poorly to being submerged in water for extended periods. “Urethane coatings, if left submerged, can develop blisters and begin to delaminate,” says J.P. In other words, when water permeates the surface of the urethane coating, it creates bubbles underneath the surface of the paint, which lead to flaking and peeling of the layers of paint.

When I asked him how long it would take for a fresh coat of bilge paint to begin to flake from being left submerged in bilge water, J.P. said it could take anywhere from a week to months depending on preparation, film thickness, and the time submerged. To fix it, you’d have to sand the remaining paint off, prime, and repaint, which is time-consuming and costly.

It’s best practice to keep the bilge areas dry 24/7, automatically, rather than just waiting for a deferred maintenance hassle like this one.

When it comes to gel coats, “water can permeate, but it’s a lot more stable. [Standing water] is not as big a problem [on gel coats as on urethane], but it is very unsightly,” says J.P.  This is good news for those of us who are still not doing anything about the water in the bilge. But standing water will easily stain gelcoat and corrode mounted hardware and wiring.   According to J.P., “the staining can get oily and ugly, and boat owners will pour degreaser, acid, and bleach down there to try to clean it up.” If you own a boat with a gelcoat bilge, which includes most smaller boats, you’re likely already aware of the staining that can happen on your gel coat.

It’s best practice to keep the bilge areas dry 24/7 so that they never stain, as it’ll simplify cleaning and maintenance and improve the resale value of the boat.

Alfred Baurley: Hello. At the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show here with Connor Henley from Bahama Boat Works. He’s gonna go ahead and tell us a little bit about the history of Bahama Boats. It’s a family business. Tell us a little bit about the Arid Bilge System and how it coexists very well with the Bahama Boat brand.

Connor Henley: Absolutely. Thanks for having me, Alfred. So, Bahama Boat Works was started by Scott Henley. Company’s been in business for 15 plus years, and the biggest thing that he strived for in the industry is just having the best fit and finish of any center console boats out there. Scott’s been in the industry for over 40 years, originally started his career as a boat captain. He knows exactly how to fix things and how difficult it could be to work in these compartments in these boats. So originally, one of the founders of Jupiter, and also went on to be one of the founders of Venture Marine. And then, of course, here we are with Bahama. So there’s a lot of DNA that helped bring the Bahama together to really show what it takes and, you know, with everything being finished, nice to actually build a quality fishing machine.

We’re very limited production. We build anywhere from 12-15 boats a year depending on spec, and that’s how we’re able to actually achieve the level of fit and finish that we do. Like Alfred said, we’re a family owned company, so when you do purchase a Bahama, no matter the size, you are joining a family. And so with that, you get a product that’s second to none, and you also get a resale value that really can be compared to any of the best in the industry. So keep the level of finish and quality that we do, we also need to work with brands that are able to help bring them to help as well. Unfortunately, one of the most overlooked items that you can actually get for your big boat, center console is an Arid Bilge System.

I recommend that all our customers get them put in, especially in that bilge area because there’s a lot of moisture that builds up in that area. And we’re in a marine environment. It’s one of the  harshest environments that you can be in, especially with saltwater. And there’s a lot of things that people don’t take into account. You know, you have dark areas when your hatches are closed. You got moisture build up. You know, you are constantly getting rained on, sun. You can mix that heat, you know, hot, humid air with dark environments, and that leads to one of the worst things possible–mold. The Arid does an excellent job in keeping these compartments clean and dry, so that when you open that up, you’re never gonna be met with a horrid nightmare–when it comes to the mess to clean up and as well as your health too.

Alfred: Tell me about any brands that you guys carry. A little bit about the major brands. Like, making sure that you guys have the best possible product that you’re selling the customer. I mean remind me, you guys produce, like 12 I mean, it’s not a huge quantity that you’re producing, but I get the point. You guys are producing an absolutely top quality product, and that is the standard that you guys are trying to always achieve. And that’s why you guys are doing limited boats. You guys are doing a custom boat style, but that that’s gonna fit the needs of every one of your customers. Tell me about that.

Connor: Yeah. Absolutely. So, as far as brands, I mean, we’re a semi custom, but, you know, we obviously have our preferences of what works best for us. But, of course, you know, if you’re a die-hard fan of a particular brand, that’s something that we’re not gonna shy away from when it comes to electronics, and VHF antennas, you know, anything that there’s a wide variety of brands for custom boats. You know, we want the boat to be yours, and we’re gonna work with you throughout that whole experience to make sure that when you take delivery, it’s exactly what you’re looking for. We offer all the state of the art equipment now that you could find: Garmin electronics, SeeKeeper, or anything new that’s for Mercury, their electric steering. So technology is rapidly improving. We’re right there with all those big brands to make sure that all that new tech is incorporated with our boat.

A Guide To Boat Bilge Pumps – What Are They And How They Work

The unsettling thing about bilge pumps is the fact that they are usually a boat’s only line of defense before sinking into the deep blue, yet most boaters don’t know much about them. Rarely do boaters even talk about boat bilge pumps, and even less of their time is spent going down below to maintain them.

Of course, it is important that you get to know more about your boat bilge pumps, as you don’t want to end up being the proverbial old sailor, frantically taking water out of the bottom of his boat with a bucket.

Let’s dive in and take a deeper look into bilge pumps, what they are, what they do, and how to pick the best one.

What Are Bilge Pumps?

The job of a bilge pump is to clear the unwanted water that gets into the bilge on your boat. This water can come in due to errant waves, drip through packing gland, a broken hose or clamp, leaking port holes or hatches, and much more. Essentially, bilge water is almost impossible to avoid. While the stock bilge pump that came with your boat may do the job well, though, you want to be sure that it acts as a serious line of defense in the case that your boat begins sinking out at sea, giving you enough time to call for help or make it back to the marina.

Most well-educated captains who plan to undertake long crossings over open water will upgrade their bilge pumps by adding a higher-volume one, as a backup.

How Do They Work?

There are three common types of electrical bilge pumps that you will find on the market, namely the centrifugal, the rubber lobe and the diaphragm.

Centrifugal pumps work using a rotating, solid impeller, which like a turbine will push water. This type of pump will propel water up into the discharge hose and usually sits in the lowest, deepest position of the bilge. That water is pumped from the bottom up, but once air comes in contact with the impeller, cavitation usually stops the movement of water completely. Once this type of pump shuts down, all of the water that is still sitting in the discharge hose comes gushing backwards into the bilge. So the base water line left behind, when these pumps shut down, is usually around 1 ½”. The twin seals between the impeller and the motor, protect the pump’s electric motor sitting in the bilge, for a time, limiting the life of the pump. Many boaters have tried to place a check valve on the output side, near these pumps in order to prevent the back wash, only to find that this creates a condition called vapor lock, where the pump can’t prime itself, as air becomes trapped between the pump and the check valve. These are still the most popular of all bilge pumps as they are very quiet, use little power for the volume of water pumped, are relatively inexpensive and usually have a 3 to a 4 year life span in the average wet bilge. Also, if these pumps are accidentally left on, there is usually little damage potential within the first few hours.

Rubber lobe bilge pumps used to be the most popular and common of all bilge pumps, until Clinton Rule invented the Centrifugal bilge pump back in the early 60’s. These pumps have a rubber impeller that spins in a housing where there is a restriction between the intake and outflow, causing the rubber lobes to crush temporarily, attempting to compress the water and forcing it out into the discharge port. These pumps are lower volume and not particularly electrically efficient. They can pull some air with the water, but cannot be left to run dry under any circumstances. Here, the water lubricates the rubber impeller as it spins in the housing. So, without water, the impeller heats up and starts to stick to the housing. Additionally, if oil or fuel ends up being pulled through the impeller, the rubber will usually expand, also locking the pump. They will offer you a brown Nitrile replacement impeller that should not absorb the oil, and then you ask yourself, why didn’t they automatically install the Nitrile one at the factory. Most of the engines on boats today use a mechanically driven rubber lobe pump for their raw water engine cooling systems.

Diaphragm pumps have chambers, and work more like your heart, where they pulse to move the water through the two chambers and two one-way valves. So, this type of pump creates a suction that pulls out the unwanted bilge water.  Diaphragm pumps can be run dry for a time without any damage, and are self-priming. This means that they develop suction and prime themselves without being submerged in water. Unfortunately, they cannot move as much water when compared to centrifugal pumps, and won’t be able to tolerate bits of debris or trash, which can lodge in the pump valves. These pumps will usually have an intake strainer that will fill with small debris and will have to be serviced / cleaned regularly. These pumps are the noisiest of all the pumps and again, these pumps are not as electrically efficient as the centrifugal pumps, but when set up correctly, they can draw the bilge water levels down to ½” in the manual mode. In the auto mode, when they are connected to the average float switch, they will usually still leave over an inch of water behind.

In simple terms, all bilge pumps leave residual bilge water behind and this is what brings us to the Arid Bilge System

Most of us boaters have to deal with bilge water on a daily basis. There is no question that thinking about it is just as much of a daunting process as dealing with it, though unfortunately, leaving it alone can have far worse consequences. Follow along to understand the do’s and dont’s of treating bilge water.

We’re going to be honest, your boat is often referred to as a vessel, and there is no way to completely avoid getting bilge water down below. It’s just a part of boating life. Of course, what matters most is how you decide to deal with it.

Bilge water can get into the hard-to-reach, lower compartments that sit at the bottom of your boat, leaving you with expensive and labor-intensive consequences in the long run, if not taken care of. Having good bilge pumps can minimize the amount of bilge water that your vessel carries around. But to keep your boat in pristine condition 100% of the time requires a lot of labor, or an Arid Bilge System. Keeping your bilges dry can also help to keep your vessel free from possible failure, while keeping your family, guests and crew safe.

Sucking Water Out of the Bilge – How Does the Arid Bilge System Work

Since the invention of the floating vessel in ancient times, boaters have been dealing with stinky bilge water down below in their boats. It is most likely a fact that every boat which you rode on as a kid, had some of this ugly water sloshing around in the hard-to-reach bilge compartments down below. Common statements to deal with this reality would have been…

“It is what it is”  or

“This is just how it is. Get over it.”

Then, we invented the Arid Bilge System to change all of this . . . permanently. Today, boaters can enjoy a vessel that is  fresh and dry down below at all times! And without all the chores normally associated with this.

Bilge pump basics . . .

Before we dive in to find out how the Arid Bilge System works, let’s get on the same page and have a general understanding as to how bilge pumps work. Like their name says: bilge pumps, do pump water. This means that the water is pushed or propelled by an impeller of some type, be it a rubber lobe, centrifugal or similar. Most bilge pumps are generally high volume. Good seamanship skills would demand that you have enough pump(s) on board to prevent the vessel from sinking, in the event of a catastrophic type event, like a broken hose or a hole in the hull for instance. Bilge pumps are usually turned on automatically by a float switch, which won’t trigger until there is well over an inch of water down below. And boaters are usually frustrated when they hit the manual override switch, not being able to get rid of the rest of the bilge water – for two very good reasons: First, as air hits that impeller, the pump’s efficiency goes to zero, as the pump is not designed to move air with water. And secondly, as the pump shuts down, the water that’s in the discharge hose comes rushing back through the pump, returning into the bilge.

What is the Arid Bilge System?

Compared with bilge pumps, the Arid Bilge System works very much like a common shop or wet vac. All Arid Bilge Systems have miniature collection chambers similar the bucket on the wet vac. Air is vacuumed out of the collection chamber, and then bilge water rushes in to fill this void.  There is no priming necessary, all the water moves in one direction only. Then the water is trapped in the collection chamber. Now instead of relying on the  common float switch, the Arid System utilizes vacuum switches that keep these systems running, until air is pulled through the intake tubes, leaving the bilges bone dry and the intake tubes stripped of liquids. These systems are low volume, and are well tuned to the day-to-day needs of the average boat.

Essentially, the aging process of the interior of the boat does slow and nearly stops. Instead of dealing with the odor, condensation damage, mildew, corrosion, or rust, the Arid Bilge will suck up all of the residual water from the source so that you don’t have to deal with the problems caused by standing residual bilge water.

Common, old school solutions . . .
